Celebrations are underway for Holi, the festival of colors. In the town of Gokul in the state of Uttar Pradesh, streets are filled with sounds of drums and songs.
[Swami Gurusharan Anand, Head of the Gurusharan Anand Ashram]: (male, Hindi)
“So (here) we apply color made with tesu flowers and saffron. Of late, people have forgotten organic things and switched to chemicals but here we celebrate Holi in a different way, with organic materials. People forgot the message behind playing Holi. They started playing Holi to take revenge rather than to spread love.”
Artists and people from around the country gathered to participate in the festivities.
[Chandni Aggarwal, Pilgrim]:
“This is the first time I have come here from Agra to play Holi. I felt very happy, I played Holi with clay, flowers, saffron and water guns.”
Though Holi is celebrated for one to two days across the country, the festival lasts for 40 days in Gokul.
